Meet the Law Garden Pollinators & Tax Time Reminder -

Happy Spring from Your Law Garden

The world is blooming and buzzing right now! It is a gorgeous Spring day in Lane County, Oregon today. We launched Law Garden, LLC in January 2024, and what a year it has been. I am so grateful for my amazing clients and staff (more about Emily and Ella below) who are working to make our communities better. Law Garden crystalized our Mission in 2025:

Rooted in integrity and inclusion, we provide strategic legal guidance and cultivate solutions to help ethically grounded nonprofits, small businesses, and Tribal entities thrive.

Meet Law Garden’s Pollinators

I am eternally grateful for the staff who are busy bees in the Garden, Paralegal Emily Kostuch, who provides essential research, writing, and client support, and Office Manager Ella Jones, who helps to keep the business side of the firm humming along. More about Emily and Ella:

Emily Kostuch, Paralegal (she/her)
Emily grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Eugene in 2017. She has a Certificate in Paralegal Studies from UC-Berkeley Extension and Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Gender and Women’s Studies from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Emily’s background has been primarily in mental health and more recently in nonprofit administrative support. Additionally, Emily volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for foster youth in Lane County.

As a Paralegal, Emily supports Stephanie with legal research, document review, and administrative support. In her free time, Emily loves to hike, read, bake, travel, play board games, and spend time with her cat, Rose.

EllaElla Jones, Office Manager (she/her) An Oregon native, Ella grew up in Eugene and currently lives in Portland. Former Client Support Supervisor with the Center for Nonprofit Law, Ella brings many years of nonprofit support and a passion for organizations making a difference in our communities. Ella studied Cultural Anthropology and Nonprofit Administration at the University of Oregon. Shortly after graduation she was trained in basic accounting and bookkeeping practices while working on a farm in the area, and continues to grow those skills in other sectors.

Ella met Stephanie a few years later while working in Eugene and quickly found similarities between their work styles, ideals, and dreams for the future. Ella supervises client support matters, and handles the Law Garden’s billing and bookkeeping.

Outside of work, Ella enjoys baking, canning, and hanging out with her cat, Bowie.

Reminder: Tax Time

Also, a reminder to my nonprofit clients that if your tax year is the same as the calendar year, your 990 tax form will be due May 15th! For more information on what form to file, check out our previous blog post about 990 filings!

A Note on Nonprofit Mission Clarity and DEI

I wanted to send encouragement to those of my clients who are challenged by how to respond to the current administration’s Executive Orders on DEI. I thought this blog post from my colleague Aparna Rajagopal from The Avarna Group was a nuanced and important reminder on clarifying language and missions: “DEI Jujitsu: Flipping the Backlash to Reframe Our Work”
